What's New in My Corner of the World!

November 6th, 2010

I just received these pictures of my mother receiving her "Mom A" flute which I made for her wedding gift. This flute is tuned to the "healing frequency" of 432-Hertz, and it is in the key of A. It plays three half-steps above the octave, and each of the finger groupings are spaced 3/4-inch apart, which was very important for her to be able to play her flute comfortably.

She seems quite pleased! Therefore, I am as well.

I met fellow flute-maker Charles Perdue for the first time! Having spoken with him many times over the phone this was a special treat for me. I won't say Charles is tall but I'm 5'11" so you judge for yourself! (I'm kidding — I'm 5'9" and Charles is 6'5" — but given he is so slim and I'm so rotund you may see why I call this our "Mutt and Jeff" pictures. You may note, I'm wearing a "slimming" vertical stripe shirt while Charles' shirt has a broad horizontal band to visually "thicken" him up — neither of which is working! heheh)

Charles and I both love making and playing the Native American style flute. Charles is a skilled flute maker living in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and has been making flutes for over 10-years, while I am a new-comer to the scene... which is Charles' fault by the way, so blame him! We were introduced by David Rogers (www.FluteMusicFromTheHeart.com/), who's facing away from the camera in one of the photos above.

One of my favorite flutes is a low-E which Charles made. It produces the most lovely sound, and easily plays four half-steps above the octave. It is a challenge to make a flute that will play this 1.4-octave range, and quite an accomplishment for the flute to play them all so easily!

Charles brought a bag of flutes with him and I had a wonderful time digging through them and playing them. He seemed to have a little of everything from tiny little drones to a giant drone to a super low F and flutes all betwix and between — what fun! We will have to do this again some time as there wasn't nearly enough time to get this out of our system. I'm looking forward to whenever that may be.

Please note, while I admire much of the Native American culture, I am not a Native American Indian.
So far as I know, my bloodlines are 100% European, including Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish, Holland, and German... along with a number of unknowns, I'm sure. One may properly refer to me as an European-American Mutt ;^) Although, in truth, I consider myself an American, not an European-American. My mother's bloodlines here in North America pre-date the American Revolution and my great-great-grandfather on my father's side was a circuit preacher in Kansas around 1900.
